Built on the ninth Century, Prambanan Temple is the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia. Located not far from the Buddhist Borobudur temple, the proximity of the two temples tells us that on Java, Buddhism and Hinduism lived peacefully next to one another. Prambanan is a magnificent spectacle and an icon of Indonesia’s cultural heritage.

The first mention of Prambanan was in the Syiwagrha Inscription (856AD). With three main temples for the Trimurti; Shiva the destroyer of the universe, Vishnu the keeper of the universe, and Brahma the creator of the universe. Back in the glory days of the old Mataram Kingdom, Prambanan was used as a Candi Agung for various royal and religious ceremonies.

After hundreds of years of neglect, the Prambanan temple was rediscovered by CA Lons, a Dutchman, in 1733. Since then, this temple has been revitalized and today is widely regarded as the most beautiful and graceful Hindu temple in Indonesia. The grandeur, complexity, and integrated architectural concept of Prambanan makes this a truly amazing structure. As a unique cultural and architectural marvel, Prambanan was declared a World Heritage site in 1991 by UNESCO.

To add to your holiday experience at Prambanan Temple, you can watch the Ramayana Ballet show. Ballet is a drama and dance performance accompanied by Javanese music. The show, played by 200 professional dancers and local musicians, tells the story of the Hindu epic Ramayana, adapted to Javanese culture. Although there is no dialogue between players, you can follow the story easily. The Ramayana Ballet is held on the Termuka Stage or Trimurti Building every Saturday night. You can buy Ramayana Ballet tickets at the ticket purchase location.
