The Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat is a palace complex in the city of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This palace was founded by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwana I in 1755 as the newly established Yogyakarta Palace due to the split of Islamic Mataram with the Giyanti Agreement. This palace is a fraction of the Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace of the Surakarta Sunanate (Kingdom of Surakarta). So that the Mataram dynasty was continued by 2 kingdoms, namely the Yogyakarta Sultanate and the Surakarta Sunanate. Although the Sultanate of Yogyakarta officially became part of the Republic of Indonesia in 1945, this palace complex still functions as the residence of the sultan, and they still carry out the sultanate tradition to this day. This palace is now also one of the attractions in the city of Yogyakarta. Part of the palace complex is a museum that houses various collections belonging to the sultanate, including gifts from European kings, replicas of palace heirlooms, and gamelan. In terms of building this palace is one of the examples of Javanese palace architecture, having a luxurious hall and spacious grounds and pavilions. The palace’s chief architect was Sultan Hamengkubuwono I, who founded the Yogyakarta Sultanate. His architectural expertise was appreciated by the Dutch scientist Theodoor Gautier Thomas Pigeaud and Lucien Adam, who considered him a worthy successor of Pakubuwono II (founder of the Surakarta Sultanate). The palace layout, which followed the basic design of the old city of Yogyakarta, was completed in 1755-1756. Another building was added by a later Sultan of Yogyakarta. The shape of the palace that appears today is largely the result of restoration carried out by Sultan Hamengku Buwono VIII (r. 1921-1939).
