The Mentawai Islands, which is also a district in West Sumatra Province, have been known as one of the best surfing locations in the world since 1993. The islands which consist of 4 small islands, namely Siberut Island, Sipora Island, North Pagai Island and South Pagai are visited by at least four thousand foreign surfers every year during the wave season, from March to September. The second route is by air from Minangkabau airport in Padang to Rokot airport in Sipora which is more expensive and the number of airlines and schedules is also more limited.
