The Mentawai Islands are directly facing the Indian Ocean so that the characteristics of the waves are high and large with around 70 surf wave spots in there.

There are 2 surfing spots in these islands which are named by surfers as the Lances Right and Macaronies spots, both of them are listed as the 10 best surfing spots in the world with consistent waves. The natural conditions of the Mentawai islands are still very beautiful with their own beauty, this is because the Mentawai people are very close and respect the nature around them. They believe that there are three spirits who they believe protect the natural life of the Mentawai Islands. The three are Tai Ka Manua as guardian of the sky, Tai Ka Bagat Koat as guardian of the sea, and Tai Ka Leleu as guardian of forests and mountains. If there is an imbalance between the three natural lives, local people believe that one of the guardian spirits can show anger.

There are two routes to get to Mentawai. The first is by sea using a fast boat that departs from the sea port of Padang city to Sipora Island. This fast boat schedule is three times a week with a capacity of 200 passengers for one trip and a travel time of about 3 hours. The second route is by air from Minangkabau airport in Padang to Rokot airport in Sipora which is more expensive and the number of airlines and schedules is also more limited. To support the activities of surfers, a number of inns or accommodations in the form of resorts and homestays, then food stalls and motorbike rentals are also available in the Mentawai Islands.
